Description

Scandium fluoride exhibits an unusual negative thermal expansion, which means it contracts when heated. This phenomenon can be explained by four oscillations of fluorine ions. Scandium fluoride can be prepared by the reaction of scandium and fluorine, or by the reaction of scandium oxide (Sc2O3) extracted from scandium yttrium and ammonium hydrogen fluoride at high temperature. Sc2O3 + 6NH4HF2 → 2ScF3 + 6NH4F + 3H2O
