Samarium Boride SmB6 CAS 12008-30-9 For Chemical Valence Fluctuation

Samarium hexaboride (SmB₆) is a rare earth boride with unique physical and chemical properties. At high temperatures, it exhibits the electrical conductivity of a metal, while at low temperatures it transforms into a topological insulator with a surface that allows electrons to move freely, and the direction of electron motion is locked to the spin.

In the field of scientific research, samarium hexaboride has become an important material for studying quantum phenomena such as Klein tunneling because of its topological insulator properties. By converting the surface of samarium hexaboride into a superconducting material, scientists have observed the strange phenomenon of electron transport, which is expected to revolutionize quantum computing and precision sensing devices.

In addition, samarium hexaboride also has excellent field emission properties and has application potential in electron emission devices.

    products features

    Name: Samarium boride, Samarium hexaboride
    Molecular formula: SmB6
    CAS: 12008-30-9

    Description

Samarium hexaborate is a black powder, which is difficult to dissolve in water and hydrochloric acid. At present, the preparation of samarium hexaborate is generally by boron carbide thermal reduction method, and the reaction formula is Sm2O3 + 3B4C--2SmB6 + 3CO; because of the introduction of boron carbide as the reaction raw material, the carbon content of the product is difficult to control, and because of the high hardness and large particle size of boron carbide, it is easy to produce the phenomenon of uneven mixture, which makes the chemical composition of the product deviate. Samarium hexaboride is an intermediate-valence compound where samarium is present both as Sm2+ and Sm3+ ions at the ratio 3:7. It belongs to a class of Kondo insulators. New research seems to show that it may be a topological insulator.

    Used

Its electrical resistance indicates that the material behaves as an insulator; however, its Fermi surface (an abstract boundary used to reliably predict the properties of materials) contradicts this, indicating that the material actually behaves as a good metal. At temperatures approaching absolute zero, the quantum oscillations of the material grow as the temperature declines, a behavior that contradicts both the Fermi analysis and the rules that govern conventional metals.
