A brief discussion on the preparation process of yttrium nitride powder

Rare Earth nitrides have a very high melting point (for example, the melting point of yttrium nitride reaches 2570℃) and are very stable at high temperatures. Yttrium nitride powder can be used in tantalum powder metallurgy to improve the processing properties of tantalum powder. It is also expected to be used in oxide and nitride high temperature ceramics.

Rare earth nitrides can be obtained by different methods, but there are few reports on the preparation of rare earth nitride powders. A study briefly describes the research overview and results of the two-step method for preparing yttrium nitride (YN) powder. First, the crystal form of rare earth metal yttrium changes after forming hydride, the volume becomes larger, the texture becomes brittle, and it is easy to grind, so as to make yttrium hydride powder of different particle sizes (0.38~0.038mm); the yttrium hydride powder is dehydrogenated at 750℃, and the vacuum degree reaches 1×10^-3Pa, and then high-purity nitrogen is directly introduced, and the temperature is gradually increased to 1000℃ to generate yttrium nitride powder.

Studies have shown that the two-step method can be used to obtain yttrium nitride powders of different particle sizes, which can meet customers' requirements for yttrium nitride powders of different particle sizes; using low-oxygen content high-purity metallic yttrium as raw material and selecting high-purity hydrogen and high-purity nitrogen as reactants are necessary conditions for the preparation of high atomic ratio yttrium nitride powders.
