A Brief Discussion on the Preparation of Yttrium Oxide Transparent Ceramics

Yttrium Oxide (Y2O3) transparent ceramics have the characteristics of high melting point (2430 ℃), wide optical transparency range (200~8000 nm), excellent corrosion resistance and thermal stability, especially the low infrared emissivity and absorption coefficient exhibited in high temperature environment, which makes it stand out among many transparent ceramic materials and shows broad application prospects in many scenarios such as lasers, transparent windows and semiconductor devices.

As the application of Y2O3 transparent ceramics continues to expand, traditional dry-pressing methods are limited in meeting the diverse demands for ceramic sizes and shapes. Gelcasting offers significant advantages in the fabrication of large, complex-shaped ceramic parts, addressing drying cracking and microstructural inhomogeneity, which have long been key factors affecting the yield of ceramic parts.

In the 1990s, a near-net-shape ceramic process-gelcasting-was developed. This made it possible to produce large-scale, complex-shaped Y2O3 ceramic components. In recent years, gelling materials used in gelcasting have expanded beyond acrylamide (AM) gelling systems to include isobutylene and maleic anhydride copolymer (Isobam) gelling systems and several natural gelling systems, such as alginate, gelatin, pectin, and agarose. AM and Isobam gelling systems are the most widely used.

Using nano-Y2O3 as raw material and AM gel system, Y2O3 transparent ceramics with excellent performance were successfully prepared through gel casting molding combined with vacuum sintering.
