Anhydrous Erbium chloride (ErCl₃) is a pink crystal that is an important chloride of the rare earth element erbium. It is stable at room temperature and has a high density with a melting point of 774ºC and a boiling point of up to 1500ºC. Anhydrous erbium chloride is a mild Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis, especially in methanol solution, which can efficiently catalyze the acetalization of aldehydes. In addition, it is used in industrial fields such as the manufacture of erbium compound intermediates, optical glasses and chemical reagents.

    Description: After the reaction of erbium oxide with hydrochloric acid, the aqueous solution was evaporated, concentrated and cooled to form erbium chloride hexahydrate. In order to avoid the hydrolysis in the process of heating dehydration, the crystallization water can be removed by vacuum heating dehydration in the presence of ammonium chloride to give erbium chloride. The purpose of adding ammonium chloride is to chlorinate tbocl produced during dehydration with ammonium chloride:

    Uses: Erbium chloride is an important member of the lanthanide halides, and its most mature application in organic synthesis is as a mild Lewis acid catalyst. Erbium trichloride can effectively catalyze acetalization of aldehydes in methanol solution. In the case of apparent steric hindrance, selective ketalization of two different ketones can be realized. Because of the difference of aldehyde ketone structure and ketone ketone structure, the selective reduction of the substrate molecules containing aldehyde ketone structure and ketone ketone structure can be realized.
